It's been working on a system, called SmartSens, for quite some months, getting what it calls a proof-of-concept and applying for a patent. The demo the company wore at yesterday's Expo Japan event featured several real-time transit stations around the city of London. The comparison isn't immediately clear from the footage, since there's no actual transit shown. But the idea seems quite compelling. Using no interaction between a phone or tablet and an actual device to interact with the real-time transit service, the sensor is supposed to automatically slow down or speed up the movement of the trains from one platform to another. The train signals itself at the stop at it reaches the end of the line. It's sort of clever, and it underscores what many people detest about "smart" transit systems — always a place for spammers and shills. The notion would obviously get around some of that annoyance, though smart-transit startup SmartThings recently came under fire for posting clever jokes that it thought would be funny to various transit officials (for instance, one company sent a photograph in a "transit commute" app to Mayor of Vancouver, Wash., Gregor Robertson who responded with an emoji that very clearly showed he was thinking about simple croissants). Kryptos's system could allow for rapid responses and offers other clever AI capabilities, selling the premise that the project is intended to make real-time transit real. In the case of an uncontrolled like Bukit Timah, the system could create a portal that would connect and notify residents that an issue with no evacuation or bill collectors existing nearby has been detected without requiring people to opt in to a local app. There is also the possibility of the system being capable of dealing with 911 requests for a real-time assessment; events could be scheduled to happen at rather specific times that would send the system automatically to the affected area. It's all important work. The SmartSens team says it conducted a scientific assessment of its transit system, finding that the system is advantaged in a company "the US placed fourth in an international survey about connected devices." SmartThings says its Smartphone Certified Marketplace is global.
