Royals second baseman Matt Dominguez was so confident he would play against Houston Astros left-hander Matt Garza that he said he wasn't even wearing his walking boot when he met the left-hander Thursday.
"It's almost like when you're a good day pitcher against a left wing," Dominguez said. "My thoughts were, it was going to be two days' outing. Let's finish things out and get back on it."
Dominguez worked out with Garza and minor-leaguer Matt Freeman, and the two discussed this history, what they're looking forward to about the veterans' clubhouse.
"I was looking forward to competing with him every day," Dominguez said. "And he was looking forward to contested battles. So we were both excited to see how it went."
Dominguez, who said he will remain two days rehabbing from the broken hand, other of his injuries, played through his left knee injury before getting hurt. He scheduled his first rehab games on a 98-degree day April 7 and 6, and continued showing an ability to pick it up fully when he played poorly for a day April 22 against San Diego.
Fortunately, the first baseman, hitting .240 with 20 homers, won't miss any major time. He said he wasn't sure if he would be ready for Opening Day against Toronto on April 19 or if there was any chance Garza would start him in his continuation marathon.
Dominguez, 30, has joined Houston fellow Rollins, Chris Carter and Rule 5 pick Joe Blanton in the starting lineup. Like Castro, Rollins has questioned Garza's durability. Rollins said Garza isn't it for him. Lyons said it made sense.
"Jeff and Healy talked about this this week," Lyons said. "Maybe he's not right, but this move probably was a perfect solution.
"In a perfect world, why would he keep this risky deal going?
